Urslautal golf club just a little short of 6500 yards is a true test of the sort of golf one can expect in Austria. The architect Keith Preston has made sure that one has to apply the ‘grey matter’ in significant quantities if shooting scores lower than handicap are to be achieved.

Look out for the penultimate hole on the front nine – a par five where the big hitters bring into play a narrow approach to the green. Also the long par 4, 14th is where many a round comes unstuck with a tight tee shot followed by a water and bunker guarded green. Once this hole has been negotiated the pretty par 3, 15th is there to cheer you up ! Pause a while to admire the views of the ‘Steinenesmeer’ mountain range before striking the ball 200 yards down hill over trouble onto the green. And just as you think you’ve played well. try the last hole for size. At nearly 600 yards there still seems a mountain to climb before enjoying the superb hospitality in the clubhouse.
